Hints & Tips

Helpful Hints for Better Storage.

  1. Spray furniture with a good polish. Cover with drop cloths.
  2. Do not store food items unless in sealed containers.
  3. Defrost refrigerators and leave the door open place deodoriser inside.
  4. List contents of boxes on all sides, number and seal with tape.
  5. Use boxes, plastic bags or clothing bags for storing clothes.
  6. Wrap mattresses in plastic or paper and do not set directly on concrete floor.
  7. Keep all items off the floor if possible to let air underneath.
  8. To retard rusting of exposed metal, use a light coating of oil.
  9. To avoid moth etc. damage whilst goods are in storage it is advisable to liberally use moth balls or a similar product.
  10. Plan your storage space. Place those items that you may need access to in the front and allow for walkways.
  11. Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep in a safe place elsewhere.
  12. Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier one.
  13. Wrap pictures and mirrors in cardboard and mark "FRAGILE" and stack on end.(Not flat)
  14. Large appliances can be used as "packing cases" for blankets, towels, cloths etc.
  15. Shovels, rakes, hoes etc can be stored together in empty rubbish cans.
  16. Tables with removable legs should be "broken down" to save space.
  17. Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of upholstered furniture.
  18. Even though the management take precautions against mice these can come in with other tenants belongings, IT IS THEREFORE ADVISABLE TO PLACE RODENT CONTROL BAITS INSIDE YOUR STORAGE UNIT.
  19. It is NOT advisable to store PIANOS or ART OBJECTS.
  20. To guard against linens drawing damp, wrap a cup of soap powder in a mansize handkerchief and store amongst sheets and other linens.
  21. Stereos, TV's and Videos /DVD's - if you have the original boxes use these otherwise use bubble wrap and cartons.
  22. Batteries should be removed from all appliances and toys to avoid leakage.
  23. Computers need special care. If you have the original packaging use it or bubble wrap and place in a carton.
  24. All mowers or machinery must have the oil and petrol drained so that they do not pose a threat to other storers.
  25. When storing be aware that Wanaka weather can be varied. The company cannot be held responsible for what you store in your unit.

What not to store.

Any goods that are illegal, stolen, inflammable, explosive, dangerous, or perishable or that are a risk to others.
